I don’t believe that there is a key to happiness. I don’t think that every person has one major thing in their life that makes them unconditionally happy. Except, maybe golden retriever puppies. I can honestly say that that always makes me happy.
Which makes me wonder: What really makes me happy?
I think that the secret to happiness is the little things. There are small wins throughout the day that, unless I sit down and appreciate them, are the fleeting moments of happiness that everyone is looking for. Most of them are pretty little: a cup of coffee that you made perfectly, being able to carve out five minutes in your morning to catch the beginning of the Today show, going into the grocery store for one thing and there is only one of them left.
Another thing that I don’t think can happen enough is giving compliments. It is something so easy and takes such little effort that can really make someone’s day. A compliment about a nice smile, noticing something different in someone, or just writing a quick note to someone take almost no time, but can give someone that small victory that they need to get through the day.
It’s these little victories in your day that make it. All of us, myself included, are so focused on the past or the future that we often forget to appreciate these little things in the present.
I guess what I’m trying to get at is I have a theory that if you take a few moments each day to appreciate the little things, you may be a happier person. You can also be the reason that someone has a good day. So find something in your day today that makes you happy. Appreciate it for a minute. Give someone a compliment too. They could probably use it.
